Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) composite material backed with cemented tungsten carbide for the machining of hard ferrous materials.

Manufacture
Manufactured by sintering together carefully selected synthetic particles of cubic boron nitride (cBN) at very high temperature and pressure, DBC50 and DBA80 possess high degrees of hardness and abrasion resistance coupled with toughness. DBC50, with its relatively low cBN content (50%), is less thermally conductive than DBA80 or AMBORITE.

Performance
The graph below shows results of extensive comparative turning tests to assess the abrasion resistance of the enhanced AMBORITE DBC50 and original DBC50. It can be clearly seen that DBC50's excellent abrasion resistance in application has been maintained.

Tests in interrupted cutting applications have shown improvements in performance. However, the main advantage of enhanced AMBORITE DBC50 should be realized in the production of cutting edges during tool fabrication.

Applications
The cemented tungsten carbide backing allows DBC50 and DBA80 to be used as a brazeable insert in tools for machining hard ferrous materials (45-65HRC). Both can also be used as clamp-type, full-faced inserts.

DBA80, like AMBORITE, works by self-induced hot-cutting, which causes the workpiece material to soften within the immediate chip generation zone. the heat generated is discharged through the chips as well as through the relatively highly conductive DBA80 insert, leaving the hardness of the workpiece unaffected.

DBC50 is ideal for the production of high-quality cutting edges. Chip softening, though still important, is less of a feature than with higher cBN-content materials and takes place at much lower energy levels.
