Tool Fabrication
CVDITE CDM is a grade of material which can be mechanically ground
in a similar manner to natural and MONOCRYSTAL diamond. Supplied
as a free-standing solid plate of diamond, 0.5 mm or 0.2 mm in
thickness, CVDITE CDM has been prepared with one fine lapped
surface. This is the preferred surface for bonding. Brazing to
tungsten carbide substrates can be carried out in a vacuum furnace
or reducing gas atmosphere, using high temperature active braze
alloys. CVDITE CDM also has highly polished face which is
recommended as top table or rake face of the tool. This is
beneficial in producing a sharp, chip-resistant cutting edge.
CVDITE CDM contains no
solvent/catalyst metal or electrically conductive binder phase and
therefore requires mechanical grinding (as opposed to EDM
machining) to produce suitable cutting edge geometries. Diamond
grinding wheels, which are conventionally used for processing PCD
tools, can be used effectively. Recommendations on
mechanical grinding of CVD diamond are available on request.
